Cocktails are always a good idea in my opinion. They are fun, easy to make, and always seem to impress. They work great for dinner parties, brunches, nights out(or in), girls’ nights, really you name it, cocktails work. But every now and then cocktails are not the answer, there are certain events and places where cocktails probably shouldn’t be served. Things like baby showers and events with lots of children in attendance probably aren’t the places for cocktails. Enter Virgin cocktails, these are the answer to those times when you need something special to serve, but cocktails themselves won’t work. They also make a great kid-friendly version of a cocktail that can be served along with regular ones so the younger guests don’t feel left out.

This Blueberry Lime cocktail is actually the first virgin cocktail I created, it turned out way better than I expected for being the first attempt and is now one of my favorite drinks. While I first served this cocktail in the dead of January. I think it would make a lovely summer or Mother’s Day brunch beverage.
But before we get to the cocktail I’d like to mention a couple of things regarding the ingredients.

Monin Blueberry Syrup

a bottle of blueberry syrup

Personally, I like Monin Blueberry Syrup for a few different reasons. The first is that it tastes good, the flavor is there without being overpowering. And it has just the right amount of sweetness.
The second reason is that they use simple ingredients. Their blueberry syrup contains only pure cane sugar, water, natural blueberry flavor, and citric acid(or lemon concentrate, depending on which bottle you buy). It’s cocktail syrup the way it should be, simple and straight to the point. As someone who loves simple foods and from scratch cooking, I was happy to find a syrup that was so similar to one I would make at home.

Ginger Beer

If you’ve never heard of ginger beer, the first thing you need to know is that it isn’t beer, it’s actually just ginger soda. Ginger beer is popular throughout Europe and the United States and has started to pop up quite a bit recently in my little part of the world. It is also becoming very popular in the world of cocktails(or I’m late to the game). It’s a simple and easy choice to use in place of club soda, plus it adds an extra kick of flavor. I use Bundaberg Ginger Beer, it is not the healthiest beverage but it’s better than most ginger sodas you find at the store. They also use real ginger root and have a short list of ingredients. Not to mention they use these cute vintage-looking glass bottles:)
You should be able to find Bundaberg or a similar brand at your local shops. You can find it online as well. But due to the cost of shipping glass bottles, I wouldn’t recommend ordering online if you can avoid it.

Now for the moment, you have all been waiting for, without further ado, I give you the Virgin Blueberry Lime Cocktail.

How To Make A Virgin Blueberry Lime Cocktail

For the cocktail, you will need
2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
2 tbsp. blueberry syrup
well-chilled ginger beer, enough to fill the rest of the glass
A cocktail glass for serving.

Pour the blueberry syrup followed by the lime juice into the glass. Open the ginger beer, and carefully pour it in(you want the glass to be fairly full but not overflowing). And Enjoy!

You could serve this over ice, but I prefer my drinks without ice, and if the ginger beer has been well chilled you shouldn’t have to worry about it getting warm.

Tips for serving cocktails

For small parties or brunches, cocktails can simply be made on-demand, either as your guests are arriving or throughout the party as needed.
For larger gatherings or parties that require the host/hostess to be in the kitchen preparing food or serving hors d’oeuvres. I recommend setting up a simple self-serve cocktail bar.

To do this, simply set out the ingredients, measuring spoons, and glasses. Type up and print out the recipe(or hand-letter one) and set it in the center of your bar.

This allows guest to easily make their own drinks as they arrive plus it’ll save you a bit of time. Just be sure to use a font that is easy to read!

  1. I don’t actually drink alcohol, but this sounds delicious anyway! I’m a big fan of ginger-ale, I wonder if I could make a virgin version?

    1. This actually is virgin! Ginger beer is Europe and Australia’s version of ginger ale. It is a ginger soda with a stronger ginger flavor and less sugar than ginger ale and is 100% alcohol-free!
