Hot chocolate, and pretty anything hot-chocolate-related, has been a winter and holiday staple for as long as most of us can remember. And it doesn’t matter how old I get, I’ll never say no to a creamy, chocolatey cup of hot cocoa. Still, I have to admit, I love this chocolatey, hot buttered rum almost just as much.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a rum girl through and through. Forget cocktails and fruity drinks (though I enjoy making those too!); I’ll take a rum and Coke over most of them any day of the year.

So, between my homemade eggnog recipe(another holiday classic that features spiced rum), my love of rum, and the fact that I already adore hot chocolate, it’s safe to say this drink was simply meant to be.

Rum, chocolate, and an excuse to make another cozy holiday drink—plus the chance to use an ingredient I already have on hand? Honestly, it’s hard to go wrong with this recipe.

But the best part about this hot buttered rum hot chocolate is how easy it is to make. It’s the perfect cozy, grown-up winter drink, great for serving at a dinner party or your next Christmas get-together. It adds a fun twist to both hot chocolate and hot buttered rum and is sure to be a hit with pretty much everyone.

So be sure to give this cozy, chocolatey, perfectly spiced drink a try this holiday season!

Ingredients

  • water

  • dark chocolate, roughly chopped. Baking chocolate, chocolate chips, or your favorite dark chocolate bar will all work well; just be sure to use a good-quality chocolate
  • unsalted butter
  • vanilla extract
  • cinnamon
  • sea salt

Garnish/Topping Ideas

  • a cinnamon stick
  • a pat of butter
  • whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder
  • ice cream

Directions

In a small saucepan, heat the water and spiced rum over medium heat. Add the vanilla extract and unsalted butter to the mixture and whisk until the butter is completely melted.

Once the butter has melted, add the ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt, whisking to combine.

Remove the pan from the heat, add the chopped dark chocolate, and whisk until the chocolate is fully melted.

Divide the hot buttered rum hot chocolate between two mugs and add your desired toppings. I usually top mine with a pat of butter.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Unlike most of my alcoholic drink recipes, I’m sorry to say I don’t have a kid-friendly or alcohol-free version of this one. While this hot buttered rum is perfect for most adults, it’s definitely not meant for kids or anyone who doesn’t drink. You could leave out the rum, but I’d highly recommend serving classic hot chocolate instead for any children or non-drinkers you may be hosting this holiday season.

If this hot buttered rum hot chocolate isn’t quite sweet enough for you, feel free to add a sweetener of your choice. Brown sugar and maple syrup would both be delicious!
