I’ll to honest I’m not usually much of a milkshake person or much of a shake person in general. I prefer my ice cream. But I am a coffee person, hot, iced, blended, I’m pretty much down for any kind of coffee, any kind, any time, anywhere. So needless to say I’m a pretty big fan of these coffee milkshakes!

I was first introduced to espresso milkshakes when I started working at a local coffee shop in our town, where I instantly fell in love with these milkshakes. They also happen to be my little brother’s favorite drink, and the perfect summer treat, so, of course, I knew I would have to recreate these milkshakes at home!

What is the best kind of ice cream to use?

In short, you can use any kind of ice cream you like, at the coffee shop I used to work at, we used chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. My little brother swears that cookie dough ice cream makes the best espresso milkshakes, and personally, well, I guess I’ll be pretty boring. My top 3 ice cream flavors would be:

  1. vanilla ice cream
  2. chocolate ice cream
  3. coffee ice cream

If you are looking for something more fun or adventurous, try one of these!

  • Cookie dough ice cream(you can consider this an honorable mention)
  • Strawberry ice cream
  • Cookies and cream ice cream
  • Mint chip ice cream
  • Chocolate peanut butter ice cream

You can also play around with your espresso milkshakes, try mixing two flavors of ice cream, or add any of these additional mix-ins.

  • cocoa powder
  • caramel sauce
  • chocolate syrup
  • chocolate chips or chocolate shavings
  • peanut butter
  • almond butter
  • M&Ms
  • Oreos
  • maple syrup

How to make an espresso milkshake at home

Ingredients.

  • A double shot of espresso You can also use a 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee, cold brew coffee, or instant coffee granules dissolved in hot water. The key is just to have a small amount of very strong coffee. If you have an espresso machine by all means use it! You can also likely find instant espresso powder, as well as brewed espresso at your local grocery store.
  • Softened ice cream of choice
  • Milk to thin. I like to use whole milk, but you can use whatever you prefer, Almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, and soy milk, As well as thinner kinds of milk like 2% and skim will all work well in this recipe.

Directions.

Take your ice cream out of the freezer and allow it to soften for 10 minutes. The key to making a good creamy milkshake to is start with soft ice cream!

Place your ice cream in an upright blender, and add the espresso and a splash of milk. Blend on high speed until smooth, adding more milk if needed to reach your desired consistency. If you prefer a thicker milkshake you’ll want to add only a little milk, if you like your milkshakes on the thinner side you’ll want to add roughly 1/2 cup or more of milk.

Taste, add more coffee if needed, and blend again, just until the coffee is mixed in.

Pour into a tall glass(s), top with whipped cream and coffee beans(or chocolate-covered espresso beans!) if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

This recipe will make one large espresso milkshake or 2-3 small milkshakes. You can find the jars I used HERE.

If you are making a chocolate or ”mocha” milkshake you’ll probably want to add a little extra coffee. As the espresso doesn’t come through quite as well with chocolate as it does with vanilla.

If you are really looking to have a little fun with this recipe, try making a boozy coffee milkshake, add a splash of baileys Irish cream, or your favorite cream liquor. And Enjoy!
