Homemade White Hot Chocolate | white chocolate hot chocolate
This homemade white chocolate recipe is rich, creamy, and a fun alternative to traditional homemade hot chocolate. Made with simple ingredients, this creamy white hot chocolate is incredibly easy to make, can be topped with any of your favorite hot cocoa toppings, and is sure to be a hit this winter!

This delicious white hot chocolate recipe is actually a bit of a repeat here on the blog. Last December, I shared my homemade Grinch hot chocolate, a hot white chocolate recipe I created for my Grinch-obsessed nephew and, of course, dyed neon green.
To be completely honest, before working on that recipe, I don’t think I had ever really drunk a white hot chocolate before in my life. I’d had some raspberry and blackberry white hot chocolates before, but never a plain one.

And needless to say, I didn’t realize how many people love white hot chocolate. And honestly, I still can’t wrap my brain around the fact that there are people who actually prefer it over regular hot chocolate.
I’m sure, at the end of the day, my Grinch hot chocolate could easily have doubled as a homemade white hot chocolate recipe. But I really wanted to give this recipe—and the white chocolate in it—a chance to shine.

So I’m back this December with my super simple and delicious easy white hot chocolate recipe! Featuring creamy white chocolate, warm milk, and any of your favorite hot chocolate toppings, this white hot cocoa is sure to be a hit this winter season.
Plus, it’s a fun—and some would argue just as delicious—way to switch things up. It’s a great recipe for serving to those who aren’t big fans of chocolate (and of course, white chocolate fans too!). This warm and cozy drink is the perfect way to end any cold day or to enjoy after a long afternoon spent playing in the snow!

How To Make Homemade White Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- Whole milk. You can also use 2%, 1%, or skim milk. Or substitute your favorite non-dairy milk, such as almond milk or soy milk
- Heavy cream, you can also use half-and-half or additional milk
- Vanilla extract
- White chocolate chips OR white baking chocolate, roughly chopped — just be sure to use good-quality chocolate!
- Whipped cream and sprinkles for topping, optional
Hot chocolate topping ideas
- Crushed candy cane
- Mini marshmallows
- Chocolate shavings
- Chocolate syrup
- Irish cream. More of an add-in than a topping, but adding a splash of your favorite Irish cream is a fun and delicious way to make a grown-up version of this white hot chocolate recipe!

Directions
In a small saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat, whisking often, until the mixture is hot and small bubbles appear around the edges of the pan.
Once the milk mixture is hot, remove the pan from the heat. Add the white chocolate, and whisk until the chocolate is completely melted.
Pour into a mug of your choice and top with whipped cream. Or any of your favorite hot chocolate toppings, if desired.
Serve immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Notes
I created this recipe as a single-serve white hot chocolate. But you can easily double or triple this recipe to make enough of this delicious drink to go around!
If this white hot chocolate isn’t sweet enough for you, feel free to add more white chocolate or some additional sweetener. White sugar, brown sugar, and even maple syrup would all work well.
Of course, you can easily swap out the white chocolate in this recipe for dark chocolate or milk chocolate to create a traditional hot chocolate. Or you can check out my super-easy, decadent homemade hot chocolate recipe!
