I know oatmeal isn’t usually anyone’s first choice for breakfast, I hated oatmeal as a kid, it wasn’t till I started making my own homemade instant oatmeal, that I actually began to enjoy it.

Today I love eating oatmeal, especially steel-cut oats, and homemade instant oatmeal! This easy strawberry oatmeal recipe is my personal favorite.

Growing up the only time I half enjoyed eating a bowl of oatmeal was when my Mum would treat us kids to a box of instant oatmeal from the store, and though there were plenty of yummy flavors to choose from, I always chose strawberries and cream.

And today I still stand by that choice, only now I make my own instant oatmeal at home! This easy recipe uses simple ingredients and can be thrown together in no time.

How to store instant oatmeal/meal prep ideas

Another big reason I love this recipe so much is that it’s perfect for meal prep, and a great way to start cutting out processed foods! This recipe is sure to be a hit with the entire family and save you time in the kitchen. Plus breakfast might just become your new favorite meal of the day!

You can easily double or even triple this recipe to make a big batch, homemade instant oatmeal will last for at least 1 month, so this recipe was basically made for meal prep! Below you’ll find my two favorite ways to store this recipe for easy meal prep and quick grab-and-go breakfasts!

Create individual oatmeal jars, using 8-oz mason jars with lids.

This is actually my favorite way to prep all my instant oatmeal recipes, I find these jars easy to store and I don’t often have to worry about them getting spilled or lost in the pantry! Simply fill a clean jar with instant oatmeal, followed by your favorite nonperishable oatmeal toppings! (details for this recipe are in the recipe card below). Scraw on the lid and store until ready to eat!

Tip: if you are meal prepping only for yourself, or for other adults, try using a wide-mouth 16-oz canning jar. Prep the same as above, but with this method, you can cook your oatmeal right in the jar!

The second easy way to meal prep instant oatmeal is to create your own homemade instant oatmeal packets.

This can easily be done using sandwich bags, simply label each bag, add your ingredients, seal and you’re done! These bags are great for taking on the go, and they can easily be stored in your pantry as well until ready to eat!

Homemade instant oatmeal jars and packets can be stored in a cool dry place for up to 1 month.

If this recipe isn’t quite sweet enough for your liking, feel free to add any sweetener of your choice. Brown sugar, white sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, and even honey will all work great!

You can also make this recipe extra creamy by using hot milk in place of the hot water. Any type of milk will work, even strawberry milk! Personally, I like to use whole milk, but you can use any type of milk you like, even non-dairy milk! Almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, and soy milk will all work well!

Feel free to add any of your favorite toppings to this recipe! Vanilla extract, fresh berries, fresh fruit, a pinch of salt, a splash of cream, and chia seeds would all be delicious!
