Pizza sauce seems to be one of those things, one of those items that we all know is easy to make, easy to store, and makes a great addition to the homemade pizza night. Yet at the same time, it’s one of those things that we seldom actually get around to making.

At least that was the case for me, granted I don’t actually use pizza sauce on most of my pizzas. But still, I would find myself wondering every time I stood there spooning marinara sauce into my homemade pizza crust, why I didn’t just make my own pizza sauce.

What was standing in my way? Why was this, one of the easiest recipes to make, something I kept putting off and putting off? And honestly, I didn’t really have an answer to any of those.

If you don’t know me, then you probably don’t know I have little unspoken goals for myself. Okay maybe some of them aren’t so little, like my goal of learning how to make as much of everything I eat from scratch.

Each month I try to swap out something else, something store-bought for something homemade.

And since I was already making my own homemade sourdough pizza crust, I figured it was about time to start making my own pizza sauce as well.

And so with my strong will, a can of diced tomatoes, and the potted herbs, I actually managed to keep alive for the whole summer. I set off to create my own homemade, from-scratch pizza sauce.

And a few weeks later, I’m happy to report we had success. And I finally have a good pizza sauce that I actually like and enjoy putting on my pizza, (possibly even a sauce I enjoy more than BBQ sauce and garlic butter.)

This seriously is a great homemade pizza sauce recipe, that is easy to make, is a nice thick sauce(as all pizza sauces should be), and tastes way better than anything you’ll find in the grocery store!

Make It Your Own

Pizza sauce is a recipe that is meant to be played with, changed, and ultimately made your own. And let me tell you the possibilities are endless.

Try using fresh tomatoes in place of canned ones. You can also use a variety of tomatoes, you don’t have to stick to just red ones, try using yellow, orange, purple, or all three!

Add fresh garlic and onions in place of dried ones. Or try adding fresh shallots in place of the onion.

Play around with the herbs and seasonings till you have a flavor you love. You can add crushed red pepper flakes for an extra kick. Or use Italian seasoning or dried herbs in place of the fresh ones for a super easy pizza sauce.

The list goes on and on, so don’t be afraid to play around with this recipe, or change things up. Pizza sauce is a very forgiving recipe and tastes amazing with a variety of flavor combinations!

What Makes Homemade Pizza Sauce Better?

Pretty much everything! There are a lot of things that make homemade pizza sauce better than the ones you buy at the store.

First. It’s super easy to make, has less sugar, and has no preservatives. And using fresh herbs offers a better and stronger flavor.

Second. It’s cheaper, whether using fresh or canned tomatoes, making your own sauce will come out cheaper in the end. Especially cheaper than continuing to buy pizza or pasta sauce from the store.

Plus you can make large batches of pizza sauce when tomatoes are in season, and freeze, or can it! And you’ll have enough pizza sauce to last you through the winter!

Third. Is that making your own pizza sauce at home,(or anything for that matter.) means you are the one in charge. Want to change the flavors? Want to use honey or maple syrup in place of the sugar? Go for it! You also get to decide how thick or thin you want it, how much or how little flavor. The possibilities are endless, and you get to be the one who decides it all!

Another great reason is that making your own food from scratch is better for you, and better for the world around You.

It gives you the opportunity to feed your family good real food, and it allows you to support your local farms and farmers. It saves money and time in the long run.

It’s also a great way to slow down and enjoy the little moments in life, savor good food, and celebrate the life God has blessed us with.

I know I’ve said it before, but I’m going to keep on saying it till my dying day. There is nothing quite like sitting down to a meal you’ve made with your own hands, surrounded by the people you love the most, and tasting fresh, real food.

It’s one of those things I believe everyone should experience at least once, and you might be surprised how little things, like a from-scratch homemade meal, can change your perspective on life.

So be sure to give this homemade sauce a shot on your next pizza night!

I assume this is intentionally timely. My wifes home tomato crop is in the midst of being harvested and our middle child never stops nagging us for pizza every.single.day. so this will come in handy. Thanks!
