Homemade Gingerbread Hot Chocolate
This tasty gingerbread hot chocolate recipe calls for a few ingredients, takes little time to make, and is the perfect homemade hot chocolate for the holiday season. Featuring homemade gingerbread syrup, dark chocolate, and any type of milk you like, this recipe is warm, creamy, cozy, and delicious. Plus, I’ve included my easy homemade whipped cream recipe!

The past few years, I’ve been on a real gingerbread kick as soon as the holiday season starts. I don’t know what it is about that warm gingerbread spice and that classic holiday flavor, but I just can’t seem to get enough of it.
And while molasses cookies will always have my heart, I don’t really care to mention how many gingerbread cookies I eat around Christmas every year…
But needless to say, this love of gingerbread has led to the creation of quite a few gingerbread recipes over the last two Christmases, as apparently just eating a gingerbread cookie wasn’t enough for me. Last year, I shared a couple of those recipes here on the blog—namely, my homemade gingerbread syrup and gingerbread latte recipe.

And well, to make a long story short, I wasn’t done seeing what I could add that classic gingerbread flavor to. What started as a need to use up some leftover syrup, combined with inspiration from a packet of hot cocoa mix a sibling of mine had gotten for Christmas, led to the creation of this delicious, creamy, chocolatey stovetop gingerbread hot chocolate recipe.
And I’m happy to say this hot chocolate recipe is everything I dreamed it would be; it’s perfectly creamy and cozy, with just the right amount of chocolate and the perfect amount of gingerbread flavor!
It’s the ideal hot chocolate for enjoying during the holiday season and perfect for curling up with on Christmas Eve or while you’re watching any of your favorite Christmas movies.

How To Make Gingerbread Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- Whole milk, you can also use 2%, 1%, skim milk, or your favorite plant-based milk, such as soy milk.
- Heavy cream, you can also use half-and-half or more milk, but the finished hot chocolate won’t be as creamy.
- Vanilla extract
- Dark chocolate, roughly chopped. Be sure to use good-quality chocolate.
- Gingerbread syrup. I love making my own homemade gingerbread syrup, as I already have the ingredients on hand during the holiday season. But you can also purchase gingerbread syrup online.
- Whipped cream, for topping (optional). See the recipe notes for my easy homemade whipped cream recipe!

Directions
In a small saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and gingerbread syrup.
Heat over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until the milk is hot and small bubbles appear around the edges of the pan.
Once the milk mixture is hot, remove the pan from the heat and add the chopped chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is completely melted.
Pour into a mug of your choice and top with lots of whipped cream (if using).
Serve immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Notes
I love to top this hot chocolate with whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon. But it’s also delicious with whipped cream, a cinnamon stick, and/or a small gingerbread cookie.
I find that dark chocolate pairs best with the gingerbread syrup to give you the overall best hot chocolate flavor. But you can also use semisweet chocolate, milk chocolate, or even chocolate chips—just be sure to use good-quality chocolate.
