- 1 cup whole milk you can also use 2%, 1%, skim milk, or your favorite plant-based milk.
- 1/2 cup heavy cream you can also use half-and-half or more milk, but the finished hot chocolate won’t be as creamy.
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 oz dark chocolate roughly chopped. Be sure to use good-quality chocolate.
- 2 tbsp Gingerbread syrup I love making my own homemade gingerbread syrup, as I already have the ingredients on hand during the holiday season. But you can also purchase gingerbread syrup online.
- Whipped cream, for topping Optional. See the recipe notes for my easy homemade whipped cream recipe!
In a small saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and gingerbread syrup. Heat over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until the milk is hot and small bubbles appear around the edges of the pan.
Once the milk mixture is hot, remove the pan from the heat and add the chopped chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is completely melted.
Pour into a mug of your choice and top with lots of whipped cream (if using).
Serve immediately and enjoy!
I love to top this hot chocolate with whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon. But it’s also delicious with whipped cream, a cinnamon stick, and/or a small gingerbread cookie.
I find that dark chocolate pairs best with the gingerbread syrup to give you the overall best hot chocolate flavor. But you can also use semisweet chocolate, milk chocolate, or even chocolate chips—just be sure to use good-quality chocolate.
