Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup unsweetened or bittersweet chocolate roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp all-purpose flour you can also use whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder you can also use black cocoa powder, dutch-processed cocoa powder, dark chocolate cocoa powder, or natural cocoa powder
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 3/4 cup white sugar OR cane sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chunks you can also use dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line an 8×8 glass baking dish with parchment paper and set aside until ready to use.
  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and chopped chocolate, whisking often. Heat until the butter and the chocolate are completely melted and the mixture is smooth and shiny. Set aside until ready to use.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients(cocoa powder, flour, and salt). Whisk to combine and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat together the wet ingredients (the sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs) until it is well mixed and pale yellow in color.
  • Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the sugar mixture and stir with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon until completely combined.
  • Add the flour mixture 1/3 at a time, mixing well between each addition. Then scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix again.
  • Add your chocolate chunks and fold to combine.
  • Spoon your finished brownie batter into your prepared pan and place it in the oven.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownie comes out clean.
  • Allow the brownies to cool for 15-20 minutes before cutting. *
  • Cut into 16 squares and serve, on their own, topped with frosting or powdered sugar, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

*For gooey brownies, cut and serve your brownies while they are still warm. If you are planning on frosting your brownies or topping them with powdered sugar, allow them to cool to room temperature before cutting.
Any leftover brownies can be stored in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days!
