I don’t know if everyone in America loves ranch dressing, or if it’s just my family, particularly my younger siblings. Who will, in fact, eat ranch dressing on literally anything, carrot sticks, hot dogs, french fries, chicken wings, pizza crust, chicken tenders, chicken nuggets. Bascily if you can name it, they are probably dipping it in ranch dressing.

And while I don’t share their undying love for ranch dressing, it is my favorite dipping sauce, especially for fresh vegetables! I usually pick up at least one big bottle every time I go to the grocery store, and we rarely eat out without ordering a few sides of ranch.

For a long time, I figured there was no harm in buying it from the store, after all, I didn’t have a ranch recipe I liked, and it seemed easier and faster than making it at home.

But during the past year, I really wanted to challenge myself to start making more of our food from scratch. I decided the easiest way to start making more of our food at home, was to start with something simple, namely spices and condiments.

So long story short I decided it was finally time to start making my own ranch dressing.

I played around with several different ranch dressing recipes, till I finally landed on this one, which is my opinion the best ranch dressing recipe ever!

While most homemade dressings call for fresh herbs, fresh dill, real buttermilk, and usually a long list of other ingredients. I decided to simplify mine, but using my homemade ranch seasoning mix as the main ingredient!

I create a creamy base, then let the seasoning work its magic! Both the seasoning and dressing call for simple basic ingredients and can be whipped up in less than 5 minutes!

This easy restaurant-style ranch dressing is perfect for any recipe that needs ranch dressing, it’s a great staple to have on hand, is way healthier than any store-bought version, and is kid-approved!

How to make the best homemade ranch dressing

Ingredients

  • whole milk, you can also use buttermilk,  1%, 2%, or skim milk. You can use coconut milk or any dairy-free milk you like!
  • sour cream, you can also plain Greek yogurt or a dairy-free sour cream substitute!
  • real mayo, don’t use salad dressing or Miracle Whip, as it will make the dressing too sweet.
  • homemade ranch seasoning mix

Directions

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, sour cream, and mayo, until well combined.

Add the ranch seasoning mix, taste, and adjust if needed. If you would like your dressing to be a little thinner, add more milk, a splash at a time until you reach your desired consistency!

Serve immediately, or transfer to an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to use.

Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Homemade ranch dressing can be stored in the fridge for up to 7 days! I like to store mine in mason jars, but you can store it in any airtight container. I would recommend using glass though!

You can easily turn this recipe into a homemade buttermilk ranch dressing! Simply use buttermilk in place of the regular milk. If like your dressing to have a tangy taste but you don’t have any buttermilk on hand, you can add a 1/2 tsp of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar!

If you like your dressing to be slightly thicker, add 1-2 tbsps of extra sour cream and a little more seasoning!

I like to spruce my dressing up sometimes, I’ll add fresh parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice, to create a light fresh flavor. Or from fresh garlic and a splash of Worcestershire sauce, to create unqine flavor with a slight bit! You can also add some cayenne pepper or hot sauce to make your own spicy ranch dressing!
