I make a lot of simple syrups, or flavored syrups at home, not only because it’s way cheaper than buying them, but also because it’s fun!
I love getting to turn whatever fruits or berries happen to be in season into delicious homemade simple syrups that are perfect for adding to my morning coffee or a hot cup of tea.
But of all the simple syrups I’ve made thus far, I have to admit this homemade apple simple syrup recipe is by far my favorite!
I love how easy this recipe is to make, and the fact I can make it with whatever kind of apples I happen to have on hand.
But it’s the flavor I love more the anything. This apple spice syrup perfectly captures the fall flavors and is perfect for adding to any of your favorite fall lattes!
If you aren’t a big coffee drinker though,(but I will say this syrup is perfect for coffee drinks!) this homemade apple syrup recipe is also perfect for hot and iced tea, apple cider, homemade cocktails, and mocktails. And makes a delightful addition to pancakes, waffles, vanilla ice cream, and even apple pie!
This delicious recipe is sure to be a hit and become a fall staple, plus it’s an easy way to use up fresh apples. It also makes a lovely homemade gift for any fall get-together or even Christmas!
How to Make Cinnamon Apple Simple Syrup
Ingredients
- a ripe apple, washed, and cut into small pieces. I love to use MacIntosh apples, but you can use any kind of apple you like. Sweet apples(such as a gala or fuji apple). Granny Smith apples, Red Delouse Apples, and Honey Crisp apples all work well!
- ground cinnamon
- cane sugar, you can also use white sugar, golden brown sugar, or dark brown sugar.
- water
Directions
Place all the ingredients in a medium saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Simmer stirring often until the sugar dissolves completely and the apple pieces have broken down slightly. If you are using a firmer apple crush the pieces with the back of your spoon to help break them down and release the apple juice.
Once the sugar is dissolved lower the heat and continue to cook stirring often until the mixture has thickened slightly. Remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool momentarily.
Pour the hot syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a mason jar or an airtight container. The remaining apple pieces can be discarded or eaten. They are especially good on vanilla ice cream!
Allow the syrup to cool uncovered for 2-3 hours or until it reaches room temperature. Cover tightly and transfer the finished syrup to the fridge until ready to use.
Be sure to give your apple syrup a good shake before using, in case the cinnamon has started to settle on the bottom of the jar. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Homemade apple simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container or glass jar in the fridge for up to 1 month. Shake cold syrup before using.
Whole cinnamon sticks can be used in place of the ground cinnamon in this recipe if that is all you have on hand. Or if you aren’t a big of having ground cinnamon in the finished syrup.
If you like you can also use apple peels and apple cores to make this recipe. I make a lot of pies and crisps during apple season and often have a large pile of apple scraps by the end of the day. This recipe is a great way to make the most of those scraps. Or the apples that are a bit past their prime.

I love to store my homemade syrups in small glass mason jars or glass bottles. Glass is the best option for storage but any airtight container or bottle will get the job done!
